Caring for Mother Earth |
NDNAEU 1 “Sacred Relatives” |
Compelling Question | Why is it important to care for Mother Earth? |
Standards and Practices | K-2 – ET1-1: ET1.A Defining and Delimiting Engineering Problems A situation that people want to change or create can be approached as a problem to be solved through engineering. Asking questions, making observations, and gathering information are helpful in thinking about problems. Before beginning to design a solution, it is important to clearly understand the problem. ET1B Developing Possible Solutions Designs can be conveyed through sketches, drawings, or physical models. These representations are useful in communicating ideas for a problem’s solutions to other people. ET1C Optimizing the Design Solution Because there is always more than one possible solution to a problem, it is useful to compare and test designs. ESS3.C Human Impacts on Earth Systems Things that people do to live comfortably can affect the world around them. They can make choices that reduce their impacts on the land, water, air, and other living things for sustainability. |
Staging the Question | Why do we need ______________ (animals, plants, and non-manmade things-ex. rock)? What do they do for the earth? (ex. Bees-pollen, water, trees, buffalo, etc.) |
Supporting Question 1 | Supporting Question 2 |
Why do the Indigenous people of North Dakota consider it important to care for the land? | What are ways that we can all help the earth? |
Formative Performance Task | Formative Performance Task |
After watching the creation story, students will discuss and explain the importance of taking care of the land. | After discussing ways in which we can help the earth, design and carry out a clean-up project in and around the school. |

SUMMATIVE PERFORMANCE TASK: Supported Claim (written/spoken) or Demonstration of Process (project-based) | Defend your opinion with examples for the following: Will natural resources always be available to us? |
SUMMATIVE PERFORMANCE TASK: Extension | Pretend you are an animal native to North Dakota. Explain the positive and negative environments around you. |
Taking Informed Action / Real World Application | Create a poster encouraging the community to care for Mother earth. Decide the most effective placement and request permission before posting. |
